Drawing Inspiration from What Works in France

France is a breeding ground for innovative ideas and successful business models. When starting a business abroad, it can be helpful to draw inspiration from strategies and practices that have proven effective in the French market. Whether it’s a marketing approach, a product concept, or an organizational methodology, these elements can provide a solid foundation for structuring your business.
However, it’s crucial not to fall into the trap of copying and pasting. What works in France does not guarantee success elsewhere, especially if local cultural, economic, or regulatory specifics are overlooked.

Incorporating Local Specifics

Each country has its own dynamics: buying behaviors, cultural habits, value systems, regulations. Succeeding internationally requires a thorough study of the terrain.

  • Know your customer : Understanding the needs and expectations of potential clients is a priority. This involves observing, analyzing, and directly interacting with your target audience.
  • Meet customer needs : The offering must genuinely add value by addressing a specific problem or gap in the local market.

A Solid Capital Base for Doing Business Abroad

Starting a business abroad requires well-planned capital, with a budget calculated based on local specifics and unforeseen expenses. It’s important to allow for a safety margin and not just focus on obvious costs like corporate tax rates or social charges. Also, factor in crucial elements such as the cost of social protection and health insurance. If you’re moving with your family, these expenses can be significantly higher.

Carefully choose the legal status best suited to your activity and familiarize yourself with the setup procedures in the target country. You can research available support programs in the country for your project. For example, the Erasmus+ program for young entrepreneurs offers support and funding for part of your experience.

Preparing Your Project and Being Bold

Launching an international project is primarily about preparation and adaptation. Nothing is impossible if you are well-informed! But beware, just because a concept works in France doesn’t mean it will have the same success abroad. Before starting, ask yourself two key questions: Why am I the best person to meet customer needs? Is there genuine demand in this market?

Beyond PESTEL or SWOT analyses, the best way to assess the feasibility of a project is by being on the ground. Engage with local players, test in real conditions, and adjust your approach based on feedback. The business plan shouldn’t be a theoretical exercise but a living tool, developed alongside real-world experimentation. And most importantly, be excited about it, as this energy will drive you!

Living abroad is also something that requires preparation. Think long-term: join local associations, build a network to facilitate your integration. In terms of financing, crowdfunding can be an option to validate market interest and build a community from the start.

Finally, don’t be afraid to take risks! Reach out to at least five French entrepreneurs who have already launched their business in your target country. Their advice will help you avoid many mistakes and offer a pragmatic perspective on your project. Starting a business abroad is ultimately a human adventure and a mindset.

Conclusion by Léo Denes, Director of Inautalent:

“There is no failure, only learning. Every day brings its share of surprises, but the key is to learn from them, adapt, and surround yourself with the right people. Dare to take your chance, because it’s by stepping out of your comfort zone that the best opportunities arise”.
