Profile of the week: a senior R&D expert in medical devices

Finding an R&D leader who can take a medical device all the way to market takes time. The talent pool is small, strong profiles are rarely actively looking, and a hiring mistake is costly for a medtech company.

At INAUTALENT, we meet talented people from healthcare and industry every week. Some of them stand out. Here is one of them, presented anonymously, along with how we supported him.

The profile: an R&D engineer who drives a medical device from end to end

This is a senior profile based in the Lyon area, who has spent most of his career developing regulated medical devices. He has taken several products from concept through to market launch.

What sets him apart is the breadth of his technical expertise. He does not simply coordinate specialists: he understands and personally drives each building block of a product.

  • Electronics and hardware development.
  • Embedded software, in a regulated environment.
  • Artificial intelligence and data processing applied to healthcare.
  • Quality and regulatory affairs specific to medical devices, including ISO 13485 and IEC 62304.

He also has management experience. He has led multidisciplinary teams and managed external partners on every technical building block. He has worked with international stakeholders and is fluent in English.

What his personality assessment reveals: a conscientious profile

Every candidate we present takes a personality assessment. It does not replace the interview, but it sheds light on how a person works, makes decisions and fits into a team.

According to the four-colour model, this candidate has a predominantly conscientious profile. He likes to think before acting, relies on facts and values autonomy. He pays attention to detail and takes the time needed to make decisions.

The assessment also highlights a very strong attachment to structure: rules, deadlines and processes. In medical devices, where every step must be documented and justified, this is a real asset. His decisions are driven first and foremost by logic and analysis, and his main strengths are strategic thinking, organisation and determination.

Like any profile, he also has areas to watch. We share them with interested companies, along with the full report, so that everyone can commit with full knowledge of the facts.

What his former managers say, and what he is looking for

We spoke with two of his former managers. Their feedback is consistent: a solid scientist who is not afraid to start from a blank page. They also describe him as serious, responsible and reliable, including when the going gets tough.

Today, he is looking for a role with a strong technical focus in a medtech company. For him, the size of the company matters less than its ability to make decisions quickly: he wants a structure where technical choices do not get bogged down in long approval processes.

Our way of working: starting from the candidate

Traditional recruitment starts from a job description. A company expresses a need, then a firm looks for the right person. We do that too, but we also work the other way around.

We meet talented people before a role even exists. We take the time to understand their background, their real skills and what they are looking for. Then we work with them to find the environment where their skills will make a difference.

Before presenting a candidate, we build a complete file in three steps:

  1. An in-depth interview. We go over their background, concrete achievements, motivations and expectations.

  2. A personality assessment. It sheds light on how they work, make decisions and manage.

  3. Verified professional references. We speak directly with former managers to compare our assessment with their experience.

What this means for your company

This approach saves you time where recruitment usually takes the most.

  • Pre-qualified profiles. You meet a candidate whose background, personality and references have already been reviewed.

  • Access to hidden talent. Many excellent profiles are already employed and do not respond to job ads. We know them because we have met them.

  • Lower hiring risk. Strengths and areas to watch are shared upfront. You make decisions based on concrete information.

  • Support after the hire. We follow the new recruit through their first three months to secure a successful integration.

Our multidisciplinary team, based in France and Australia, understands the demands of the healthcare, tech and industrial sectors. We speak the same language as your R&D teams.
